ABOUT CAMPAIGN

Laying Eggs Freely

Every day, millions of egg-laying hens in Indonesia live in conditions far from what can be considered humane. Trapped in cramped battery cages, they are unable to stretch their wings, perch, or even take a simple dust bath. As a result, their bodies become covered with wounds, their bones grow fragile, and they suffer from chronic stress. These conditions not only cause severe suffering for the hens but also increase the risk of bacterial contamination, posing a threat to human health.

High stocking density, extreme weather conditions, and weak enforcement of animal welfare standards further worsen the situation. The impact is felt not only by the chickens but also by the environment, through air pollution caused by ammonia and waste that contaminates the soil.

Padahal solusi tersedia.

Through this campaign, PASI not only advocates for the protection of chickens but also drives real change within the poultry industry’s practices. The campaign focuses on:

  • Public Education The benefits of animal welfare, which positively impact the quality of life of animals, humans, and the environment.
  • Advocacy toward the industry. To commit to implementing chicken welfare standards throughout their business operations and supply chains.
  • Collaboration with the government. To promote cage-free policies that support a farming system which respects and upholds the quality of life of animals as living beings.

The #BertelurdenganBebas campaign demonstrates a genuine demand for cage-free eggs in Jakarta’s minimarket sector. This reflects both market readiness and consumer preference, which can ultimately encourage local and national policymakers to adopt and enforce regulations aimed at reducing or even banning the use of battery cage systems by 2035.

With a vision toward 2035, egg producers across the growing Asian industry can be confident that cage-free production is achievable, while also recognizing the need for greater access to information and support to make it a reality.

Good broiler chickens

Good broiler chickens Good Broiler Chicken is a campaign initiated and led by Ayam Sejahtera Indonesia to promote the fulfillment of the Better Chicken Commitment standards within the broiler farming industry by restoring chickens’ natural behaviors (Chicken Natural Behavior).

Chicken welfare is a major issue within Indonesia’s poultry industry. Despite the growing consumption and population of chickens in the country, the industry has yet to properly implement appropriate animal welfare standards. Broiler chickens raised in substandard and overcrowded conditions experience poor welfare, which leads to serious health and behavioral problems for the animals.

One of the key issues is stress in chickens, caused by overcrowded cages, skin infections, and bacterial exposure due to poor hygiene. #AyamBroilerBaik aims to encourage the public to commit to choosing ethically raised broiler chickens and to advocate for the implementation of animal welfare standards within Indonesia’s broiler farming industry.

Chicken welfare is a pressing issue within Indonesia’s poultry industry. This can be seen from the increasing consumption of chicken in the country, which has led to a significant rise in chicken population. According to Databox, Indonesia’s chicken consumption in 2023 reached an average of 7.46 kilograms per week, with a broiler chicken population of approximately 3.17 billion birds. Meanwhile, broiler meat production reached 4 million tons in the same year.

Despite the rising consumption and growing chicken population in Indonesia, the poultry industry has yet to adequately implement proper animal welfare standards. Many poultry farms still neglect animal welfare, resulting in negative impacts on meat quality and posing potential risks to food safety for Indonesian consumers.

#AyamBroilerBaik was created to encourage the public to commit to choosing ethically raised broiler chickens and to promote the adoption of animal welfare standards within Indonesia’s broiler farming industry.
