Jakarta, January 22, 2026 – A public discussion titled “BERTELURdenganBEBAS: Transition Towards Cage-Free Eggs” was successfully held as a collaborative forum bringing together government representatives, farmers, modern retail stakeholders, the public, and civil society organizations. The event aimed to strengthen mutual understanding and formulate strategic steps to accelerate the transition toward cage-free egg production systems,) in Indonesia.
During the constructive discussion session, several key points were successfully formulated as follows
- The Importance of Continuous Education
Participants generally responded positively to efforts to improve animal welfare through cage-free egg production systems.,This can be achieved through continuous education as a means of driving behavioral change, designed to be more relevant and aligned with the context and cultural values of Indonesian society.
- Strong Potential in the Retail Sector and Pricing Challenges
The discussion highlighted that the market for cage-free eggs,in the retail sector holds significant potential, as consumers are increasingly concerned about ethical and sustainability issues. However, relatively high prices remain a barrier to purchasing power and wider product distribution. Therefore, strategies to improve production cost efficiency, along with enhancing packaging appeal, are needed to make the product more recognizable and better accepted by the public
- Opportunities for Certification Localization
Currently, animal welfare standards largely rely on international certifications. Discussion participants emphasized the need for a national certification system that is more affordable and better aligned with the conditions of local farmers. To achieve this, outreach through social media and education is essential to ensure that farmers and the public fully understand the certification process.
- Strengthening Certification Aspects and Cross-Sector Coordination
The discussion noted that animal welfare certification is currentlyvoluntary, highlighting the need for more robust and measurable national standards. In addition, the lack of data coordination across sectors has hindered the transition to cage-free systems. ,. The government plays a crucial role in aligning policies and simplifying regulations to enable farmers to compete more effectively in both local and export markets.
