EGG-CONOMICS: An Analysis of the Economic Feasibility of Cage-Free Egg Market in Jakarta

Perkumpulan Ayam Sejahtera Indonesia (PASI) held a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) titled “EGG-CONOMICS: An Analysis of the Economic Feasibility of Cage-Free Egg Market in Jakarta on Tuesday, June 30th, 2026, at Crove Coffee, Bogor. The event served as a dialogue platform bringing together various stakeholders, including academics, farmers,Non Governmental Organization (NGO), and PASI, to discuss the opportunities and challenges of developing the (cage-free eggs) market in Indonesia. The discussion focused on the gap between growing consumer awareness of animal welfare and actual purchasing decisions in the market.

The discussion highlighted significant market potential for cage-free eggs particularly among young consumers aged 18–29 and urban communities. According to the research presented, 55% of respondents indicated that they were willing to pay 10–20% more for cage-free eggs .However, price, perceived benefits, affordability, and limited access remain as the key challenges in consumers’ mindset to move from willingness to pay to action to payOn the production side, farmers also face high operational costs, particularly feed expenses, while market penetration and consumer demand still need to be strengthened.

Through this FGD, PASI and the participants identified several strategic steps, including strengthening public education on the functional benefits and food safety of cage-free eggs, encouraging pilot project sales cage-free eggs in modern retail channels, and fostering stronger collaboration among producers, government, academics, Non Governmental Organization “(NGOs)”, and retailers. The discussion emphasized that developing the cage-free eggs market requires cross-sector collaboration to turn growing public awareness into meaningful changes in consumer behavior, while also creating opportunities for a more ethical and sustainable egg market in Indonesia.
